After the Empire (Portland Gamecraft) 2017

Disfrutadlo!

Hey there!

Apologies, somehow your post missed our radar.

The game is at it's heart a worker placement game. Each player has their own player board, which is their "fiefdom". On that board is their castle, which is represented by four walls and optionally built turrets/towers as well as farmlands on each side of the castle.

Every turn, players use their peons (workers) to take actions either on their own board or on the shared main board. These actions involve getting basic resources, trading resources for gold, gold for resources, hiring skilled refugees who add abilities to your kingdom or buildings which also add abilities. The primary player interaction comes during this phase, when players are competing for buildings, refugees and resources. After everyone has taken all their actions (one at a time in player order), players harvest food from their functional farms and feed equal to the number of peons they have. The comes combat.

Every turn, players deal with three invader cards and a siege card. One invader card is revealed throughout the entire actions phase and the rest only reveal after players have decided which walls to defend with their troops as combat begins. Invaders always attack from one of the four cardinal directions and the invader cards are omni-directional on their backs, so player spin them around as they shuffle them. On one side of the invader card is a red bar, which represents what direction the invaders come from. As invaders are revealed, players flip the cards from left to right and then place the invaders on the side shown. Invaders also have a gold value and ONLY attack you if you're at or above that value. Gold is both a resource and the goal of the game, so players will be constantly spending and gaining gold throughout. As you get higher in score, however, you are opening yourself up to more and more possible attacks. The siege card is non-directional, but behaves the same as the invader card as far as the gold-level qualifier is concerned. Siege cards are either siege engines like mangonels and trebuchets or events, like poisoned well and fetid meat (which is hurled over the walls by the invaders and spreads disease).

Combat plays out in steps. First the invaders burn the farms wherever they are, then attempt to come inside the castle. So long as the walls still have at least one defense cube, they cannot enter. Then siege weapons fire at turrets and walls. Then your troops and towers shoot down at them and, if they have any archers, they shoot back. Next up is melee, where they damage your walls and, if they're inside the castle, fight your troops in hand to hand combat. If they are still not inside the castle, you repeat these steps. If all your troops die and any of theirs are left at the end of the round, you are sacked! If you have vanquished their troops, then you are just fine

Sacking does not mean you die, but you lose half your points, they burn one of your wooden buildings down and the following turn, since you are a burning wreck, all invaders leave you alone. Generally speaking sackings are not a good thing, but they're progressively worse as your gold level is higher (as you have more to lose). The game lasts eight turns.

Solo play is the same mechanics, but you play a longer game and are required to gain a certain amount of goal by the end of every four turns. If you are ever sacked in this version, you lose, so the goal becomes how far can you push it without dying. If you survive all 16 turns, you win!
