While Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition lives, Fourth Edition isn’t quite dead, according to Senior Manager of Dungeons & Dragons R&D, Mike Mearls.Any future D&D adventure board games, Mearls said, will use a rules set very similar to those used in the earlier Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt board games. The D&D Adventure System games, Mearls said, went over very well. The company stepped away from releasing more because they didn’t want to saturate the market, but they’re probably not done with them.“That game system its very adaptable with different storylines,” Mearls said. “So we’re definitely looking at when would be a good time to do the next installment in that series and matching it up with one of our future stories of Tyranny of Dragons.”Mearls said the D&D team will spend a lot of time focusing on new stories for the foreseeable future. However at present, according to Mearls, the company has no plans for another tabletop game in the style of Lords of Waterdeep, but that’s not for a lack of interest.“Lords of Waterdeep has been a great, great success for us,” Mearls said, but the D&D team has been too busy with other projects to work on another euro-style game. He added that he’s also not sure if a game in the Lords of Waterdeep style would match up with the stories the company is currently trying to tell.
