This game grew on me quite a bit after the first few plays. Like PoG, early games were a bit lopsided, and since I had already played PoG a lot, BtB doesn't get that "new game thrill". BUT, once you've played it a bit, the game is just as tense as PoG, tactically much richer and more interesting, and yet generally less complex and with fewer special rules. You feel like you are "gaming the system" far less than in PoG, with tradeoffs that make more sense and a system that is a more cohesive whole and with fewer wierd edge cases; with all the fronts, PoG definitely degenerates under the strain of extreme strategies, while BtB does not. Now, it's true that the order of card flow has a significant impact on the direction of the game, and that an optimal Allied deck stacking will lead to an Allied blow-out (surprisingly, either converse does not seem to be true), but this sort of thing is a side effect of a game with a reasonable level of uncertainty, and should only affect a fairly small number of games. Anyway, all in all, after some 10 games BtB seems to be fulfilling the promise that PoG didn't *quite* grasp. It would be really nice to see a minor rev of PoG incorporating some of the new stuff from BtB (mainly I'm thinking about the yellow cards).----UPDATE: With the new 2nd Edition finally correcting the, ah, unfortunate amount of card eratta from the 1st Edition, I can kick my rating up to a 9. Too bad it took a while to get here, but the original edition did have a number of finishing issues (play and card balance, some map usability stuff), and these now have been thankfully cleared up to bring this in line with what it should have been, one of my favorites of this whole series. Too bad about the length, though. Try Shifting Sands for a game you can complete it one sitting."
